- DO NOT eat high potassium foods on the emergency diet. Missing one or two treatments can cause patients potassium to increase rapidly. During an emergency diet your potassium intake should be cut in half to <500 mg/day to avoid the accumulation of chemicals and fluid in your blood due to missing treatments.
